Kushikatsu Teruterubozu

Tobita Shinchi, Osaka

Teruterubozu is a standing kushikatsu counter on the Shinsekai side of the Tobita Shinchi area, serving as a convenient and affordable food stop. The counter seats about 12 people on stools around a U-shaped fryer station where the chef works in full view. Skewers start at 120 JPY and include standard Shinsekai options: beef, pork, shrimp, cheese, and vegetables. Draft beer is 380 JPY. The quality is solid without being remarkable; the batter is light, the oil is clean, and the skewers arrive hot. What sets Teruterubozu apart from the tourist-heavy restaurants near the tower is its location: close enough to Tobita Shinchi to serve as a natural pre-visit or post-visit meal, but far enough to feel like a separate experience. The crowd is mostly men heading to or from the district, along with neighborhood regulars. English is not spoken and the menu is in Japanese, but the ordering process is visual and straightforward.

Full Review

Teruterubozu sits on a street that connects Shinsekai's tourist zone to the quieter blocks around Tobita Shinchi. It's a natural stopping point for anyone walking between the two areas, and the counter's U-shape around the fryers makes it easy to see what's available before ordering.

I stopped in on a weekday evening. Six customers sat at the counter, all men, most eating quickly and alone. The chef worked the fryers with mechanical precision, dropping skewers, timing them, and plating without conversation.

A mixed set of six skewers (1,200 JPY) arrived within five minutes: beef, shrimp, pork, cheese, eggplant, and lotus root. Each was freshly fried, the batter golden and crisp. The beef had a good chew, the shrimp was plump, and the cheese oozed satisfyingly. A draft beer (380 JPY) was cold and properly poured.

The experience was efficient rather than memorable. Teruterubozu doesn't aspire to be a destination; it's a pit stop. But the quality is reliable, the prices are honest, and the location is practical. Six skewers and two beers came to 1,960 JPY.

The contrast with the Shinsekai restaurants a few blocks north is notable: no cartoon mascots, no shouting staff, no English menus. Just a counter, a fryer, and straightforward food.
