Kaihin Bar
Kaihin Bar brings a beach theme to landlocked Ikebukuro, with sand scattered across the floor, surfboards mounted on the walls, and tropical drinks served in coconut shells and tiki mugs. The concept sounds absurd for a basement bar in Tokyo, but the execution is committed enough to be charming rather than cringe-worthy. Tropical cocktails start at 700 JPY and include standards like pina coladas, mai tais, and mojitos alongside original creations with Japanese twists, mango shochu sours and lychee highballs. The space holds about 40 people and includes a small raised area that functions as a dance floor on busy Friday nights when a DJ plays reggae and dancehall. The crowd is young, mostly in their twenties, and skews toward groups of friends celebrating something. The decor includes string lights, fake palm trees, and enough shells and netting to stock a seaside souvenir shop. It's unabashedly fun and doesn't pretend to be anything more.

Insider Tip
Friday nights have a DJ and the dance floor opens up; arrive before 22:00 if you want a seat. The mango shochu sour is the best drink on the menu. The sand gets between your toes, so wear closed shoes if that bothers you.
Full Review
Walking down the stairs into Kaihin Bar, you leave Ikebukuro's office-building reality behind and enter a parallel universe where it's always summer. Sand crunches underfoot, string lights cast a warm glow, and a bartender in a Hawaiian shirt is mixing something in a coconut shell. It shouldn't work, but it does.
The room is rectangular, with the bar along one wall and tables scattered across the sandy floor. A raised platform at the back serves as a DJ area on weekends and additional seating on quieter nights. Surfboards, fishing nets, and Hawaiian-style artwork cover every vertical surface. A small aquarium in the corner completes the seaside illusion.
I ordered a mango shochu sour, which arrived in a tiki mug with a paper umbrella. It was well-made: the mango was fresh, the shochu was balanced, and the presentation was fun. A second drink, a classic mojito, was equally solid. The bartenders clearly know their craft despite the playful setting.
On the Friday evening I visited, the room filled steadily from 21:00. By 23:00, about 35 people packed the space, some dancing on the raised platform where a DJ was playing reggae remixes. The crowd was young, energetic, and visibly happy. Groups of friends took turns posing with the surfboards for photos. A birthday party in one corner was doing shots from coconut shells.
Two cocktails came to 1,900 JPY, no cover. The value was excellent for a fun, unique bar experience. It's not the place for a quiet drink or serious conversation, but as a party venue with personality, Kaihin delivers.
