Craft Beer Base BUD

Namba, Osaka

Craft Beer Base BUD is a standing craft beer bar in Ura-Namba that focuses on Japanese and imported microbrews. The space is small, holding about 15 people at a single counter and a few high tables. Ten taps rotate regularly, featuring breweries from across Japan alongside occasional American, Belgian, and British imports. Pints start at 800 JPY and half-pints at 500 JPY, with tasting sets of three available for 1,200 JPY. The owner is a beer enthusiast who speaks English and enjoys guiding customers through the selection, explaining flavor profiles and recommending pairings. No food is prepared on-site, but the bar welcomes outside food from the surrounding Ura-Namba restaurants. The interior is minimalist: bare concrete, a few beer-related prints on the walls, and a chalkboard listing the current taps. The crowd is a mix of Japanese craft beer fans, expats, and curious tourists. The atmosphere is conversational and relaxed, with the small space encouraging interaction between strangers.

Full Review

BUD sits on a quiet Ura-Namba street, identifiable by a chalkboard sign listing the day's taps. Inside, the counter holds 10 tap handles and behind it, the owner stands ready to pour and explain.

I started with the tasting set: three half-glasses of beers chosen by the owner based on my preference for hoppy ales. A Minoh Beer pale ale from Osaka was bright and citrusy. A Baird Brewing IPA from Shizuoka was resinous and bitter. A guest tap from an Oregon brewery was a hazy New England IPA that balanced fruit and malt.

The owner's English was fluent and his enthusiasm was genuine. He explained each brewery's history, the brewing techniques, and why he'd chosen these particular kegs. When I mentioned I'd been drinking Asahi all week, he grinned and said 'We'll fix that.'

The space is small enough that conversation between customers happens naturally. A Japanese couple next to me were working through the entire tap list and comparing notes. An Australian tourist on the other side was on his third visit of the week. The owner facilitated introductions and soon we were all sharing opinions on Japanese versus Australian craft beer.

The tasting set and a full pint came to 2,000 JPY. For the quality and variety of beer, the knowledgeable service, and the social atmosphere, BUD is one of Ura-Namba's best small bars.
