Cheap Charlie's
Cheap Charlie's is a Bangkok institution that has served cold beers from a narrow outdoor counter near the entrance of Sukhumvit Soi 11 since the early 1990s. The venue is barely a venue at all, just a wooden bar counter built against the wall of a building, with stools on the street side and a corrugated roof overhead. There are no walls, no doors, no air conditioning, and no pretension. The owner, known as Charlie, built the bar as a place where expats could drink cheaply, and that mission hasn't changed in three decades. Beer prices are among the lowest on Soi 11, and the atmosphere is purely social, people standing or sitting at the counter, talking to strangers, and watching the soi come alive around them. Cheap Charlie's relocated once due to development but maintained its format and its following. It's a standing-room-only establishment that functions as Soi 11's unofficial welcome committee.

Full Review
Cheap Charlie's is the antithesis of everything else on Soi 11. While rooftop bars charge 500 THB for a cocktail with a view, Charlie's serves a cold Singha for 80 THB from a wooden counter on the sidewalk. And somehow, it's often more enjoyable.
The formula hasn't changed since the 1990s. A narrow counter, some stools, a roof to keep the rain off, and a cooler full of cheap beer. That's it. No DJ, no menu, no theme nights, no VIP section. The entertainment is each other, and on a good evening, the conversations at Charlie's bar counter are better than anything happening in the clubs further down the soi.
The crowd is a rotating cast of expats, backpackers, tourists, and long-term residents who've been coming here for years. The common denominator is a preference for simplicity over spectacle. Standing at the counter with a beer, watching Soi 11's evening transformation unfold, is a quintessential Bangkok experience.
The bar closes at midnight, well before the clubs hit their peak. This makes Charlie's a pre-game spot rather than a destination for the full evening. Have a couple of beers, meet some people, and then decide where the night goes from there.
The prices are genuine. Beer at 80 to 100 THB is the cheapest you'll find on Soi 11 by a significant margin. There's no upcharging, no hidden fees, and no pressure to spend. Charlie's has earned its legendary status.
