Kadokura
Kadokura is a standing izakaya wedged under the JR railway arches near Ameyoko, where the rumble of passing trains provides a constant rhythm to your meal. The ceiling is low, the space is narrow, and the atmosphere is pure old Tokyo. Almost every dish on the menu is under 500 JPY. Sashimi plates, grilled fish, pickles, and tofu come out of the tiny kitchen at speed. Draft beer is about 400 JPY and highballs 350 JPY. The space holds perhaps 25 people standing along two counters, and during the after-work rush it's packed beyond comfort. The menu is handwritten on boards behind the counter, all in Japanese. Staff don't speak English but are patient with pointing. The clientele is overwhelmingly local: office workers, neighborhood regulars, and the occasional pair of tourists who found their way in. It's the kind of place where the food quality exceeds what the price suggests, a function of high turnover and low overhead.

Full Review
Kadokura occupies one of the arched spaces beneath the JR railway viaduct near Okachimachi Station. The ceiling follows the curve of the arch, low enough that tall visitors duck instinctively. The counter is a single slab of wood running the length of the space, with a second, narrower counter along the back wall.
I arrived at 4:30 PM and was one of about ten customers. By 6 PM, the space was full and people were waiting outside. The turnover is fast, though: most people eat, drink, and leave within 30-45 minutes.
A mixed sashimi plate (350 JPY) was the highlight: slices of tuna, squid, and salmon arranged on a small plate. For the price, the quality was absurd. A side of grilled mackerel (300 JPY) was charred and salty, perfect with beer. Pickled vegetables (200 JPY) and a bowl of miso soup (150 JPY) rounded out the meal.
The drinks matched the food in value. Draft beer at 400 JPY was cold and properly poured. A highball at 350 JPY was strong enough to justify the lack of a second glass. Between the train rumbles, conversation flowed easily with the regulars on either side of me.
Every few minutes, a train passed overhead with a rolling thunder that shook the glasses on the counter. Nobody flinched. The regulars barely noticed. This is Kadokura's signature experience: drinking beer and eating sashimi while tons of steel roll past a meter above your head.
Total bill: 1,750 JPY for a sashimi plate, grilled fish, pickles, soup, a beer, and a highball. Tokyo dining at its most honest.
