BrewDog Roppongi

Roppongi, Tokyo

BrewDog's Roppongi outpost brings the Scottish craft beer chain's formula to central Tokyo: 20 taps of IPAs, pale ales, stouts, and sours, poured in a two-floor space with industrial decor. The ground floor is standing room with high tables and the bar counter, while upstairs offers booth seating and a slightly quieter atmosphere. Pints start at 900 JPY for the core range and go up to 1,500 JPY for limited releases and guest taps. The food menu includes burgers, wings, and loaded fries, all priced at 1,200-1,800 JPY. The crowd is an even split of craft beer enthusiasts, expats who know the brand, and Japanese drinkers curious about non-mainstream beer. Staff speak English and can guide you through the tap list. The atmosphere is casual and beer-focused, without the party energy of the clubs nearby. Happy hour runs on weekday afternoons with discounted pints.

Full Review

BrewDog Roppongi occupies a corner building on a side street off the main drag, identifiable by the blue and black signage that's consistent across the chain's global locations. Walk in and you're immediately at the bar, a long counter with 20 tap handles and a chalkboard listing what's pouring.

The ground floor is designed for standing: high tables, narrow counters along the windows, and the main bar. It fills up quickly on Friday evenings as the after-work crowd arrives. The noise level rises with the crowd, and by 8 PM you're shouting to be heard. Upstairs is calmer, with booth seating and table service. If you want to actually taste your beer rather than just drink it, go upstairs.

The tap list on my visit included eight BrewDog core beers, four limited releases, and eight guest taps split between Japanese and international craft breweries. A Japanese rice lager from a Shizuoka brewery caught my attention and turned out to be excellent: crisp, clean, and nothing like the mass-market alternatives. The BrewDog Punk IPA was the same as anywhere, which is both the strength and weakness of a chain.

The food is serviceable American-style pub grub. The burger was good, the wings were spicy and saucy, and the loaded fries were exactly what you'd expect. Nothing surprising, but it fills the gap.

Three pints and an order of wings came to 4,500 JPY. Reasonable for Roppongi, especially for beer of this quality. The staff were knowledgeable and happy to pour tasters before committing to a full pint.
