Roppongi Hills Bar

Roppongi, Tokyo

The rooftop bar at Roppongi Hills offers cocktails with one of the better views in central Tokyo. From the open-air terrace you can see Tokyo Tower lit up at night, the skyline stretching toward Shinjuku, and on clear evenings, a silhouette of Mount Fuji in the distance. The drinks menu focuses on cocktails using Japanese ingredients like yuzu, matcha, and shiso, priced at 1,500-2,200 JPY each. Beer and wine are also available. The space is well-designed with comfortable seating, subtle lighting, and enough room between tables to feel private. The crowd is a mix of well-dressed Japanese professionals, hotel guests, and tourists who came for the view. It's quieter and more refined than anywhere on the Roppongi club strip below. Smart casual dress is expected and enforced, though they're not turning away anyone in clean jeans and a collared shirt. The terrace closes when it rains, so check the weather before planning a visit.

Full Review

The Roppongi Hills complex is a city within a city, and the rooftop bar sits at its upper reaches, accessible by elevator from the main tower lobby. Stepping out onto the terrace, the noise of Roppongi's streets fades to nothing, replaced by wind and the distant hum of the city below.

The terrace wraps around a section of the building's upper floor, offering views in multiple directions. The prime seats face west toward Tokyo Tower, which glows orange against the night sky. On a clear evening the view extends to Shinjuku's skyscrapers and, if you're lucky, the outline of Mount Fuji.

I visited on a Thursday evening and was seated within five minutes. The server brought a cocktail menu that read like a tasting guide to Japanese botanicals: yuzu gin fizz, matcha old fashioned, shiso mojito. I ordered the yuzu option and it arrived in a chilled coupe glass, perfectly balanced between sweet and tart. At 1,800 JPY it wasn't cheap, but the setting justified the premium.

The crowd was refined. Couples on dates, small groups of friends in smart outfits, and a few solo visitors who seemed content to sit with a drink and stare at the skyline. Nobody was loud. The service was attentive without being intrusive, with servers checking in at natural intervals.

Two cocktails came to 3,600 JPY. For a rooftop bar with this caliber of view, that's reasonable. The bar closes at 23:00, which makes it a pre-dinner or early-evening destination rather than a late-night spot.

The Neighborhood

Roppongi Hills is a massive mixed-use complex that includes shops, restaurants, a museum, and a cinema. The bar is at the upper level. The main Roppongi nightlife strip is a 5-minute walk downhill.

Getting There

Roppongi Station Exit 1C leads directly into the Roppongi Hills complex. Take the elevator to the upper floors and follow signs to the terrace bar.
