The Voice Mabes is one of those Mangga Besar venues that has been running long enough to settle into a consistent identity. The front room is a rectangular space with a small raised stage at one end, a bar running along the side wall, and a mix of booth and loose chair seating. Lighting is functional rather than atmospheric. The room is clean but showing wear; the upholstery has seen thousands of nights and it looks it.
I stopped in around 20:00 on a Thursday and the house band was already on their second set. A five-piece playing Indonesian rock classics from the 90s, covering names like Dewa 19, Gigi, and Slank, with a few English-language standards mixed in for variety. The regulars knew every word. A group of Chinese-Indonesian men in their forties occupied one booth and sang along with their beers held up; a mixed-age table nearby clapped through each chorus. This is not a venue performing local character for tourists. It is a local venue that happens to be visitable.
Drink prices are among the lower end of Mangga Besar, which is part of why the regulars stay regular. The beer is cold, the spirits are brand-name in the name but house-pour in practice, and the cocktails are not worth ordering. If you're here, drink beer or Indonesian whisky with water.
The karaoke rooms at the back operate as a separate business thread. Sound equipment is functional rather than current, song catalog covers Indonesian and Mandopop well, and the room rate is noticeably below the larger KTVs on the same street. If you are in a group of four to six and want cheap karaoke without the upscale KTV price structure, this works.
Compared to Masterpiece KTV down the street, The Voice Mabes is rougher, louder, and more music-first. It delivers a different experience. Travelers who want polish should go elsewhere; travelers who want a local place with live Indonesian music should consider this.
