Bar do Gordinho
Bar do Gordinho is one of Vila Mimosa's most recognizable corner establishments, sitting at a junction within the compound where foot traffic naturally converges. The bar is open-fronted, with a counter facing the street, plastic tables and chairs on the pavement, and a small charcoal grill turning out espetinhos (grilled meat skewers) throughout the evening. The owner, known as Gordinho, has been running the spot for over 15 years and is a fixture of the compound's social fabric. Draft Brahma beer flows from a single tap, served cold in small glasses. The espetinhos, typically beef heart, chicken, and sausage, are the only food option and cost a few reais each. Music plays from a small speaker behind the counter, usually forró or sertanejo. The crowd is almost entirely local: workers from the compound, regular visitors, and men from the surrounding neighborhoods who come for cheap beer and conversation. The bar has no pretense whatsoever. It is a concrete counter, some chairs, and a grill. But its position as a crossroads within Vila Mimosa means it sees more through-traffic than any other spot in the compound.

Full Review
Bar do Gordinho functions as Vila Mimosa's informal town square. Its position at a compound junction means that anyone moving between the main blocks passes by the counter. Gordinho himself, a heavyset man with a ready grin and a voice loud enough to greet people from across the street, has been a constant presence for over 15 years.
The setup is minimal. A concrete counter, a beer tap, a grill the size of a desk, and enough plastic chairs to seat maybe 20 people. The espetinhos cook slowly over charcoal, filling the immediate area with the smell of grilled meat. They are simple but satisfying: seasoned with salt and served with a squeeze of lime and a sprinkle of farofa.
Draft beer at R$6 per glass is the cheapest in Vila Mimosa, and the glasses come small enough that the beer stays cold to the bottom. Bottled options are available for a couple of reais more. There is no cocktail menu, no wine list, and no food beyond what comes off the grill.
The value of Bar do Gordinho is not culinary. It is positional. Sitting here gives you a clear view of the compound's main foot traffic and a sense of the rhythm of the place. Early evening is quiet. By 8 PM, the flow picks up. By 10 PM on weekends, the walkway in front of the bar is busy with people moving between venues. Gordinho greets regulars by name and exchanges brief conversations that reveal the social dynamics of the compound.
For a visitor, this is a safe and low-pressure starting point. You can sit, drink a beer, eat a skewer, and observe the scene before deciding where to go next. The owner is approachable and, while he does not speak English, will communicate through gestures and basic words if needed.
