Democraticos
Democraticos is one of Rio de Janeiro's oldest surviving Carnival societies, founded in 1867. The venue on Rua do Riachuelo operates as a large dance hall and event space, with a main floor that can hold well over 1,000 people. The building has been renovated multiple times over the decades but retains the feel of a grand ballroom, with high ceilings, balconies overlooking the dance floor, and a stage that accommodates full bands. On regular weekend nights, the programming alternates between forró, samba, and pagode, with the musical style determining the crowd. Forró nights draw couples who come specifically to dance, while samba nights attract a broader mix. The bar is basic: draft beer, caipirinhas, and water. Food is limited. The dance floor is the point, and it functions as one. The wood surface is large enough that even on packed nights there is room to move. The venue's location on Rua do Riachuelo puts it at the southern edge of Lapa, near the Arcos and within easy reach of the neighborhood's other venues.

Full Review
Walking into Democraticos on a packed Saturday night, the first thing that hits you is the scale. This is not a bar with a dance floor; it is a dance floor with a bar attached. The main room opens up into a space large enough to hold over 1,000 people, with a wood dance floor that stretches from the stage to the back wall. Balconies on the upper level provide seating and a bird's-eye view of the action below.
The music is live and the band is typically excellent. On forró nights, the accordion-driven sound fills the room and the floor fills with couples executing the close-hold, syncopated steps that define the dance. These are not beginners. Many of the regulars have been dancing forró for years, and the skill level is high. If you can dance, join in. If you cannot, watch from the balcony and enjoy the spectacle.
Samba nights are looser. The band plays samba de gafieira and pagode, and the crowd is more mixed in age and skill level. The atmosphere is celebratory, with people singing along and dancing in groups as well as couples.
Drinks are cheap and basic. Draft beer at R$10-15 and caipirinhas at R$18-25 are the main options. The bar is functional rather than creative. Food is minimal. Eat before you come.
The venue's history adds weight to the experience. This Carnival society has been holding events for over 150 years, and during Carnival season the building becomes the headquarters for one of Rio's traditional blocos. Even on regular weekends, there is a sense that you are participating in something that connects to a deep tradition.
The main drawback is the heat. On packed nights, the dance floor temperature climbs. The venue does not have powerful air conditioning, and the combination of body heat and physical exertion means you will sweat. Bring water and dress in light fabrics.
